“The rhythm of Milan never stops.” I first heard that phrase from a street artist playing violin at Isola, under a light drizzle. It stuck with me.
Every week, Milan breathes, grows, and reshapes itself — a city of art and asphalt, espresso and efficiency, rebellion and refinement. Whether you’ve lived here for years or you just arrived, understanding the real Milan requires more than headlines. That’s why Pulse exists.
This issue brings you everything from a sudden spike in café thefts, to Milan’s first AI-run wine bar, to the quiet charm of Lambrate’s housing market. As always, we close with practical tips to help you navigate the city safely and confidently.

🔐 Crime & Public Safety
The Pickpocket Café Scam
This week, three incidents were reported in cafes between Porta Genova and Brera: thieves pose as tourists, ask for directions, and snatch bags while victims are distracted. One incident involved a young Brazilian expat, Marina, whose backpack was stolen while she was FaceTiming her family.
🧠 Tip:
Keep your belongings on your lap or anchored around a chair leg. Avoid placing valuables on tables near walkways. If approached for help, decline politely or move indoors.
📊 Quick Stats:
- Petty thefts up 12% in Q2 2025
- Most targeted zones: Centrale, Brera, Navigli
- Peak times: Saturdays, 5–9 PM
🥬 Food Safety & Health
Unregulated Street Vendors Raise Concerns
With the heat intensifying, unauthorized food stalls have mushroomed around train stations. ATS Milano reports 9 cases of salmonella traced to unrefrigerated chicken panini sold outside Lambrate station.
🧠 Tip:
Stick to food trucks with clear business IDs or permits. If the vendor cannot produce a sanitary license upon request — walk away.
🚨 Current Alert:
- Heat-sensitive food products at risk
- 4 shops in Via Imbonati fined for expired products
🚆 Transportation & Infrastructure
E-Scooter Chaos and the Green Fix
Since the city approved 3 new e-scooter providers, sidewalks have become congested. But relief is near: Milan will introduce 120 new designated parking spots for e-scooters this August.
👷 In Progress:
- M1 renovation between Lotto and Pagano
- Tram line 9 to be extended toward Città Studi by mid-2026
🧠 Tip:
Avoid rush hour at Cadorna and Centrale stations (7:30–9:30 AM / 5–7 PM). Use the “Moovit” app for real-time alternatives.
🏛️ Politics & Society
Citizenship Law Sparks Protests
Milan saw 2,000+ people march in Piazza XXIV Maggio, demanding reforms to Italy’s ius culturae law — which affects the children of immigrants born in Italy.
One story stands out: Yusuf, 18, born in Milan to Egyptian parents, still waits for his citizenship despite finishing school with honors and speaking fluent Italian.
🧠 Tip:
If you’re an expat family with kids in school, follow updates on Ministero dell’Interno and consult the CGIL Immigration Desk for residency rights.
